Creative Challenge

Creative Challenge 2020

Creative Challenge 2020, managed by Wakefield council and funded by Cultural Development Fund, was launched in response to the Coronavirus pandemic and its devastating impact on creative sector.

The first strand of commissions chronicled community spirit and shared experiences through creative responses to COVID-19.

The grants supported 16 projects from across our district, with commissions ranging from £1k to £10k. The total investment was c. £54k sustaining 226 working days (1,672 hours) for local creatives. The projects took place across our district in Wakefield, Castleford Central and Glasshoughton, Altofts and Whitwood, South Elmsall and South Kirkby, Crofton Ryhill and Walton, and online.

We aim to present a live exhibition in spring 2021 including paintings, illustration, photography, film, music, podcasts, dance, craft and participatory community arts.
