Our Heritage, Our Stories – Creative Heritage Commissions

Posted in Opportunities

Wakefield District boasts a rich tapestry of industrial history. From its bustling textile mills to its thriving coal mines, the region’s past is steeped in innovation, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of its people.

Now, as we stride into the digital age, there’s a unique opportunity to celebrate and preserve this heritage through innovative creative endeavours.

To harness the essence of Wakefield’s industrial legacy, we are thrilled to announce ground-breaking creative commissions by inviting artists, filmmakers, and digital storytellers to explore Wakefield’s industrial past through a contemporary lens. Through a fusion of digital and audio productions, we aim to captivate new audiences and breathe new life into the stories of yesteryear.  Together, we’ll shine a spotlight on the stories that shaped our past and illuminate the path forward for generations to come.

The selected artists/organisations will have development support including the opportunity to work with our local heritage organisations, develop and inform content, alongside innovation through CoSTAR LiveLAB.

The commissions will be showcased at the Wakefield Exchange in December 2024 as part of a wider creative exhibition, also featuring Sentinel, a light sculpture inspired by the district’s mining heritage, being developed by Studio Vertigo.

Proposals for this commission call out should be submitted no later than 12.00 noon on 17th June 2024 emailed in Word or PDF format to creativewakefield@wakefield.gov.uk

Let’s harness the power of creativity to celebrate our shared history and inspire a new generation of storytellers. The past is calling – will you answer?

The commission is supported by Our Heritage, Our Stories, a 2-year project made possible thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council’s Cultural Development Fund.
