Roman Festival – Family Workshop Creative Commission

Posted in Opportunities

2024 will see the return of Castleford’s Roman festival for the ninth year running. The Roman Festival aims to showcase the heritage of the town and encourage residents and the wider public to learn more about the historic roman town. This year, the festival will feature street entertainment, an archaeology dig, a theatre show, guided tours and encampment stalls demonstrating roman activities such as metal work, bread making, toys, games and more, as well as local partners hosting a range of roman themed activities.

We are seeking responses to a roman-inspired Creative Commission to support the 2024 Roman Festival. Your response should incorporate two elements of the commission:

A free, participatory family workshop to be delivered onsite at the Roman Festival, during which the community will be invited to take part in the creation/development of the roman-themed installation.

For this temporary installation to be displayed in one of our visitor centres in Castleford.

We are keen to involve artists, producers, makers, and creatives in the delivery of this element of the festival and want to showcase the creativity and ingenuity of the Wakefield and wider West Yorkshire creative sector.

The workshop sessions should help families understand Castleford’s rich roman heritage and offer a fun, accessible and high-quality workshop within the festival this year which will also introduce new visitors to the nearby Library and Museum setting. Inclusivity is key and we are particularly keen to commission a workshop which can engage those with sensory and other disabilities.

The workshop will be drop in format and will be open for visitors from 10am – 4pm.

Expressions of Interest should be no longer than two sides of A4. Please submit this alongside your CV to by noon on Friday 29 March 2024.
