Roman Festival – Theatre Show Creative Commission

Posted in Opportunities

2024 will see the return of Castleford’s Roman Festival for the ninth year running. The Roman Festival aims to highlight the heritage of the town and encourage the residents and wider public to learn more about the historic roman town.

This year, the festival will feature street entertainment, an archaeology dig, arts and craft workshops, guided tours and encampment stalls demonstrating roman activities such as metal work, bread making, toys, games and more, as well as local partners hosting a range of roman themed activities.

We are keen to involve producers, theatre groups, and creatives in the delivery of a roman-themed theatre show, to showcase the creativity and ingenuity of the Wakefield and wider West Yorkshire creative sector.

The show should help families understand Castleford’s rich roman heritage and offer fun, accessible and interactive entertainment. Inclusivity is key and we are particularly keen to commission a show which can be adapted to make the performance more accessible for SEN and wider community audiences, for example, consideration of being open to working with/providing a BSL interpreter for the show(s).

The show will be performed outdoors, on a small 4m x 4m stage within the event footprint, holding a maximum capacity of 15 people. Stage decks, power and PA will be supplied by the council.

The show(s) need to be 15-20 minutes long and run 3 times throughout the day.

Expressions of Interest should be no longer than two sides of A4. Please submit this alongside your CV to by noon on Friday 29 March 2024.
