UNBOUND: Quick Guide 8: Artwork Delivery Phase

Posted in Development

We’re pleased to share with you a series of quick read articles for use by artists and commissioners when thinking about public art projects.

*Following confirmation of any planning or other permissions/ licences/ permits, the artwork can be fabricated (either by the artist or their fabricator) as per the detailed design report.

* During this period the artist should send update reports, including photographs/ film of the fabrication process to the Steering Group.

* A site visit to the fabricator’s workshop may also be arranged for the project manager or Steering Group.

* At this stage the Artist should finalise their risk assessment method statement (RAMS) for the work during installation and when in situ, any permissions or licences required during the installation process (such as road closures or other considerations) should be sought.

* The artist (working with subcontractors such as fabricator, contractor) installs the work at site on an agreed date and makes good the surrounding area afterwards.

* Any physical interpretation signage for the artwork should also be installed.

These resources were developed as part of UNBOUND, an artist training & mentoring development programme for artists seeking to develop their practice to deliver artworks in public spaces, which was delivered by BEAM and YVAN in 2024/25. It was part of Our Year, and was funded by Wakefield Council, Cultural Development Fund and West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
