Nicholas Vaughan

Artist

What I do:

I am a visual artist with a varied practice from sculpture, mixed media, drawing, installations, often developing fictional texts to illustrate my artwork.

What steps I took to get where I am now:

I received my degree in Sculpture from Wolverhampton University (2001), then moved to London where I completed an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design (2002).
My work has been shown in shows throughout Europe, including at The Corner House Gallery in Manchester and Imperial College in London as well as at Gliwice Museum in Poland.
I am currently based at the Art House in Wakefield.

What creative opportunities I'm looking for:

Commissions, open calls, and opportunities for collaboration with arts organizations, exhibitions in artist run spaces as well as larger galleries.

An unexpected thing about me:

I’m a visual artist but spend a lot of time writing and thinking through stories. Its great because it allows you to distance yourself from the work, and get a whole new angle on it.

My proudest moment:

Getting a drawing into the collection of the Gliwice Musuem.
Getting my work into the John Moores Painting Prize 2021.
Getting the Long Division commission which was on a public wall on the Art House.

My dream creative collaboration:

Collaboration with a perfoming arts organization. To make a script from one of my stories, then take it into puppet or live theatre.

What does Wakefield mean to me?
Liberation, open minded, inquisitive.
