Ruth Fones

Artist and Teacher

What I do:

I am an artist, specifically fascinated with the variables within our vision. Through conversations with the visually impaired community, combined with research, I strive to translate their everyday experiences into authentic and accessible artworks, to give their vision a voice and to educate and inspire the viewer. I am curious to better understand our diversities within our community. I accept that my work is transient and constantly evolving.

What steps I took to get where I am now:

Originally from Sunderland in the North East, I studied BSc Textile Design in Huddersfield, specialising in knitted textiles, graduating in 2002. I went on to work as a Knitwear Designer and then a Senior Lecturer in Textiles at The University of Huddersfield. I moved to Wakefield in 2013 and after having a family I have primarily taught local adult art classes.

I have been focused on developing my own artwork since 2020 and in particular connecting with local visual impairment charities in order to visualise various sight loss conditions.
