Dean Chapman
Railway Engineer
What I do:
I’m a part time Artist who specialises in Graphite Pencil and I have been drawing now for over 2 decades. I specialise in realism and portraiture but I have a lot of experience with scenery and building sketches too.
What steps I took to get where I am now:
Lots of practise, revisiting past works to determine areas that need improving and always trying out different techniques.
My proudest moment:
The day my son was born, he’s my greatest creation.
My dream creative collaboration:
I think i’d just really like to be part of a big project working with other artists with different styles and backgrounds, hopefully learning more along the way.
What does Wakefield mean to me?
I've grown up in and around the District, I'm proud to come from West Yorkshire and its working class background. The people are always friendly and happy to chat.

My gallery
Achilles - Charcoal base with Graphite, Mechanical and black pencil. Highlights with White Uni-posca fineliner and drawn on A2 Smooth Bristol board. Total draw time approximately 22 hours.
A Moment of Peace - Wittling down a selection of images, this one stood out the most to myself and Bob. But then it dawned on me the number of ripples in that water, this would be a challenge. However, I'm happy to report it was a very pleasant challenge and in fact, the background came together very quickly. Drawn on A3 Pink Pig Sketchbook Paper using 2B and 8B Mechanical Graphite Pencils and White Uni-Posca Fineliner.
Krueger - Robert England portraying the horror icon Freddy Krueger. Been on my list for years and finally got round to completing it. I started it a while back and ended up leaving it a while as I wasn't happy with how ot was going. Picked it back up a few weeks ago and completed him this week. Much happier now. Probably taken around 14 hours to complete and drawn using mechanical 2b and 8b Graphite pencils on A3 Pink Pig Sketchbook paper.
Guard Duty - This Long Horn Highland Cow was drawn using 2b and 8b Mechanical Graphite Pencils with a little White Gel Pen for some of the highlights. Its taken approximately 30 to 35 hours to complete and was drawn on A2 Bristol Board Paper. There were so many details but it came together nicely and relatively quickly. I think this has definitely become one of my top favourite pieces that I have worked on and I really hope I will find the time to work on more large scale nature pieces.
