Illustrator and Learning Assistant (he/him)

What I do:

I am a Dewsbury based Illustrator, with a hand drawn or painted style.

Last year, I illustrated and published my first children’s book, for an American urban farming charity.

I’ve written and illustrated online magazine articles.

I also run or assist creative and museums workshops. These are at Kirklees Museums and Galleries, as well as independent venues.

Recently, I’ve run weekly drawing and painting workshops for adult learners, at Pioneer House, Dewsbury.

What steps I took to get where I am now:

I studied a BA in Illustration at Edinburgh College of Art. (2008)

Due to ill health, I moved back to Dewsbury. Through local council support, I found work, assisting creative workshops, in schools or community hubs.

From 2016-2019, I was a Support Worker at Kirklees College, working with learners with autism, dyslexia and hearing impairment.

During this time, I taught the first year of a BA in Fine Art for Design, also at Kirklees College.

In 2019, I wanted to develop my illustration work. So I left the college, and started an MA in Illustration and Book Arts at Cambridge School of Art.

What creative opportunities I'm looking for:

Illustration commissions and projects such as editorial illustration and reportage illustration
As well as illustrating articles, I can also write them.
General creative work, such as theatre set painting, and assisting mural painting.
I can write or rewrite artists’ biographies.
Workshop work-whether running or assisting workshops.
I’d like to run regular painting/drawing workshops for adult learners. (I have recent experience of this.)

An unexpected thing about me:

I play cornet and piano.

My proudest moment:

Illustrating an article for a York University research website.
(I drew a series of cityscapes.)

Being shortlisted for a Fashion Illustration Award. (Portraits.)

My dream creative collaboration:

Working with an animator.
Illustrating a novel or a children’s book.
Illustrating printed or online articles, on a regular basis.
Developing my skills in putting together an exhibition of either my own work, or the work of others. (Possibly in setting up a gallery.)

What does Wakefield mean to me?
Somewhere with more opportunity, and wider perspectives.
